I can't seem to do an upstroke & downstroke on it smoothly, when I do an upstroke the pick kinda gets stuck in the strings, if you know what I mean. Is there a better way to position it, or what?

  1. Hold the pick so that the tip (which hits the string) is the only part that's exposed. Make sure you have a tight grip. When alternating up/down, be sure to move your entire forearm and not just your hand. Start slowly and progress from there. It also helps to use a moderate amount of force (not too lightly, but not too hard).

Remember, Marty Friedman practiced for years to perfect his style of shredding, so just take it at your own pace. Hopefully, you'll have at least a moderate tempo down after about a week.
