Im learning jazz dance and I also want to learn how to do splits?

  1. ask your instructor and don't do anything that he/she doesnt tell you.


  2. BEFORE YOU DO SPILITS ALWAYS WARM/STRETCH  YOUR LEGS UP 1ST!!!

    Try a pike stretch 1st; sit on the floor on a pike, legs straight, toes pointed, and try and get your nose as close to your knees as you can. Hold for 30 seconds. Next, flex your feet, keeping the nose as far down as possible. After you have done this, sit in a wide straddle, and attempt to get your elbows on the floor. Hold 30 seconds, then reach your hands as far out as possible, attempting to put your nose on the floor. Again, hold 30 seconds.

    Next, place either leg in front, and lunge from your knee; your rear knee is on the floor, your front foot is far in front. Hold 30 seconds, then sit back, straighten the front leg, and try to place your nose on your knees. Then slide as far into the split as you are able. Repeat on the other side. Hold each position 30 seconds.

    NEVER bounce while stretching or push yourself past the point of pain. Slow and steady does it.

    Many people feel that the body is more flexible after a warm bath, so you may want to try these drills after a warm bath. I advise doing this 2 times daily, morning and evening. If you keep at it, you should see a lot of improvement in your flexibility.

STRETCH....yesterday i had my first summer dance class for our studios summer dance program and my teacher said her goal is to have everybody in their splits by the end of the summer(5 more weeks) the class was a flex class where you focus on flexibility and i know i can do the splits because it did them at my schools dance team tryouts(and made it!!)

    SOME POINTERS:

    -keep your weight balanced(don't lean to one hand)

    -make sure you don't bend your knees

    -don't force yourself (you could pull a hip muscle and if you do you will most likely never be able to do them and maybe even to never dance like you do now)

    -stretch you legs,stomach,knees,HIPS before doing them

  4. stretch stretch stretch, every day. do a straddle stretch and butterfly. do your splits on each side every night, even when it feel like your really far from the groundd. they will get closer and closer to the groun every time you stretch

  5. Its not so much "learning" how to do splits. here is my advice. Do a quick warm up, then stretch, then dance, then go a cool down stretch. The splits will come in time.
