  1. Since they are both fourths, you just subtract.

The answer is - 2/4, which simplifies to -1/2.

  2. You have to borrow from the 1 whole in the second term by adding a fraction that is equal to 1 and has a denominator of 4 (in this case) to the 1/4, then subtract, hint: your answer will be negative and will require you to reduce it to lowest term.

  3. first u change 1 1/4 to 5/4 and then u just do the problem:

    3/4- 5/4= -2/4 and then u reduce it to -1/2.

  4. 3/4 - 1 1/4

    3/4 - 5/4

    (3-5)/4

    -2/4

    -1/2

  5. The answer is a negative 1/2.  I did this by changing the fractions to decimals and simply subtracting.  .75 - 1.25 = -.50 or a negative 1/2 or -1/2.

  6. First change  the mixed number 1 and 1/4th into an improper fraction, that would be 5 fourths, or 5/4

Now you can subtract 5/4ths from 3/4th, but you'd get a negative number, which is okay in math problems.

The problem would look like this:

    3/4  - 1 and 1/4 =  3/4 - 5/4  =  -2/4 = -1/2

You'd be "in the hole" by negative one-half.

    Make sense?

    Good luck on harder problems.

  7. To add or subtract fractions you need everything to have the same denominator.

    So you have to make 1 1/4 into a single fraction. (4/4 + 1/4 = 5/4)

    3/4 -  5/4 = - 2/4 = -1/2
