  1. Regular School, "1-12" is done online in a few ways.

First way: They will send you your books and all of the information, and they expect a certain amount to be finished by the end of the year. All of the work is finished independently. *The cost of the books is the only service charge*

Second Way: You will have an online teacher. Basically, it's 1 on 1. Sometimes the service will have sent you books, and sometimes the books are online. *Service and teacher costs apply*

Third Way: You will participate in a complete "online school." Basically how that works, is that you will receive a website with a username and password, and you will login. You have a few controls, such as raise your hand and away from computer for bathroom break. This is the most expensive. *Expensive teacher/class fee*

    College:

Basically how an online university works is that they will send you all of your books, and sometimes has an online teacher, or online help when you need it. You can then achieve a degree online. Quite interesting! *School fees apply with books and sometimes online help*

  2. It's called online schooling or "cyber"schooling.  You can use a public program, which is free (normal school fees apply), or you can enroll in a private online school (you pay tuition).

It only costs money if you use the private option.  The public school option, since it's paid for with taxes, is free, or nearly so.  It should cost the same fees as registering at your local public school.

The public online schools will provide a computer, printer, and sometimes Internet reimbursement.  They'll also send you all of the materials you need, plus give you access to an online account.

The private online schools do not provide a computer.  You have to not only pay tuition, but also purchase your textbooks.  There is typically an enrollment fee also.

Most online private high school courses cost $350/course/semester/0.5 credit and go up in price from there.  All the reputable ones will provide a teacher to teach your courses.  The "cheap" ones do not.  You just have to contact the school when you have a question or problem.

Most online schools have some type of online whiteboard/seminar programs also.  You either log in and interact live with the teacher and other students (it's not 1:1 like Joshua said), or you log on and view recorded lectures, videos, etc.

Most of your work is submitted online, but some needs to be submitted via postal mail.  Also, you may have to take proctored exams at a local testing center.  Usually libraries and/or community colleges have these.

There are a few elementary and middle school options for online schools (public or private), and the most selection in the high school market.
