  1. Firstly, does your pool have a suction hole in the center of the deep end (lowest spot) for the filter?  Does the pump still run?  Then set the filter on the "waste" setting if it has a valve, or disconnect the return line to the pool if it doesn't (if you can safely flood the area you're dumping the water into, that is!  Don't flood the basement or the electric wires to the pump!)

How about a gravity drain?  Is there a part of your land which is below the pool?  Throw one end of a garden hose in the deepest part of the pool and the other end at the low area.  Suck on the end of the hose and once you get the water flowing to the low area, it will keep going until there is no more or the vacuum is broken.

Call the fire department and ask if they want to practice pumping out of a pool.  They may come by for free and spray the water from your pool all over; everywhichway but in the pool.

    Good luck!

  2. like William b. said you'll need a gas powered pump and preferably a hose long enough to reach a storm drain.

  3. I have an above ground pool, I always thought inground pools have a drain.  Does the pool pump still work?  You may be able to rearrange the pipes/hoses so that the water does not go back in the pool.  If that is not an option, visit your hardware store.  This is where you have to decide between fast and cheap.  There are inexpensive devices that attach to a garden hose that will remove water, but they are slow.  For fast, you have to buy some sort of a pump.  The bigger it is, the faster and more expensive it will be.

  4. sara,

    try these:

they're easy to use, and pretty inexpensive.

  5. gas powdered pump.  most will pump 180 gal a min,

  6. Here are two suggestions.  First, try your local tool rental centers for a pump.  That will be faster than using the pool's built in equipment.  If you decide to use the pool pump to empty the pool, you'll have to know the valve positions to make it drain.  Be careful because if you have a skimmer(s) you'll need plugs for them when the water gets lower than the skimmer gate and could cause the pump to overheat.  Most areas do not allow draining pool water into the street, so you'll have to run a hose to the sanitary sewer line.

  7. you'll prolly have to hire someone or get a gas powered pump, which would prolly cost you just as much as hiring someone with the price of gas now
