How do you drill into ceramic?

  1. Use a tile bit and water to cool it.  Run your drill at a slow speed to minimize heat buildup.  Ceramic is a very good insulator, so heat will build up quickly.  Good luck.


  2. I like glass bits for this (drill bits for drilling glass).

I am assuming you are trying to drill into a glazed ceramic tile.  Masonry bits work fine but you must get past the tile glazing so the bit will get a bite into it.  Use a small sharp center punch or other round pointy chisel thingy and center it where you want the hole.  Tap the punch lightly a few times with a hammer to nick or gouge the glazing.  Whacking too hard could crack the tile.

    Once you have a small gouge you can drill into it.   If the drill bit still won't dig in, start with a smaller bit or try making a bigger gouge in the tile.
