How do you dry black-eyed peas?

I've planted black-eyed peas and I have no idea how to harvest and dry beans.

  1. Leave them on the plant until the pod has dried and is hard.  Keep an eye on them because if left too long the pod will split and dump the seeds (peas) on the ground. You can then pick them and shell them, helping the peas to dry further.  Leaving them in the pod if they are not absolutely dry is inviting rot and mold.  Spread the peas over a flat, dry, indoor surface so they will finish drying before storing in a large jar.

    You can also harvest and freeze or can green black-eyed peas.  


  2. Let them dry in the pod and store the pods in the garden shed or corn crib away from critters in dry safes. Shell the dryed peas as needed leaving the unused peas in the pods till needed.

  3. leave then in the pods and store them in a cool dark place,not a greenhouse.a toolshed or something similar,as long as its dark and dry ,maybe even a de humidifier may help.
