How do you edit a video that is in .mpg format?

I have this video taken from one of those inbuild cameras in HP computers. Now I need to edit the video. I tried to use Windows Movie Maker but its says it is missing a codec called MPEG-2 audio decoder codec. Also, if I convert the file in to .WMV is it going to work? How do I convert it to .WMV?

Can anyone help to edit the VDO, please?
