I have never before worked with a camera of this type before and am a bit confused. I have shot a strip of footage that I wish to edit. How do I go about uploading it onto my computer from the cassette?

  1. Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.

  2. By connecting a firewire (IEEE1394a, i.Link) cable to the camcorder's DV port and your computer's firewire 400 port.

Since we don't know what computer you have, we don't know if you need to add one.

And the camcorder needs to be in playback mode.

No, USB will not allow video transfer from the miniDV tape.
