How do you encourage your child to be more generous?

My 4 year old can be very protective of her things and often does not want to share. I think part of it is just her age, but how can I encourage her to share and appreciate that she has a lot more than many others?

Next time she doesn't want to share something tell her in a calm voice to share it but don't get angry, and say it just sort of to her I used to hate it when I was very little and people moaned at me it made me embarrassed and want to do what ever they wanted me to do even less.
