Question:

How do you expand your memory on your laptop?

We bought a laptop to replace our desktop about a year ago and kind of regret it. We don't travel with it as much as we thought and we hate dragging it out and the keyboard and mouse usage we miss from our desktop. We are planning on getting a stand, keyboard and mouse to set it up as a desktop. I asked a previous question about this set-up and most said it would work fine to use a laptop like a desktop but that the memory would suffer. I don't want to be out the money for a new desktop if I can get by with this idea but how do I increase the memory? Is there something I can buy. I know we will use the laptop a lot more with it being set up as a desktop.

Please help!!!

  1. Hi, depending on what you are doing you might not need to upgrade your memory. Does everything seem to be running fine on it, speed is good, etc? If it's running everything fine right now then don't worry about a memory upgrade. Plugging in a mouse and keyboard won't make a difference on the memory. You might want to consider getting a docking station for your laptop if it's cheap enough. That just makes it easier if you want to take the laptop somewhere. You just press a button to release it instead of pulling out plugs and reinserting them when you get back.

You could also hook up a larger monitor if you want a bigger screen. Most laptops have a plug in for an external monitor. That won't affect memory either.

So, unless you are currently seeing performance issues on your laptop, don't worry about adding memory. Otherwise you can do a search on google or Yahoo. Put in the model of the computer and memory and it should bring up places to get memory for it.

  2. Depending on your laptop, you'll probably find a little flap on the bottom where the memory is located.  You can buy a larger (in memory size) memory module and simply replace it.

    Goto:

    http://www.crucial.com

Crucial is a manufacturer of memory.  On that page, you'll find a utility that will scan your computer, tell you how much memory you have, and recommend an upgrade.

    Good luck!
