America has historically been progressive and with civil rights because they are pivotal to protecting the rights and liberties of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independance--life, liberty and the persuit of happiness. We must be able to enjoy them without threat or fear of persecution.  

There will always be a conservative group of people who resist change...it's a natural process.  As Civil Liberties moved from womens rights, and racial equality to modern issues of homosexual rights and civil unions; conservitive religous people felt threatened by this...much as how people were threatened by women and racial equality.  Part of it is fear of change and part of it is ego and human nature.

When a person feels alienated by a law in effect (or working on being in effect) they will naturally fight it weither it is a just fight or not.  As Americans have fought in the past for what they believe in, they will fight for it in the future...unfortunately not always as a united front.  

As a Civil Rights movement encroaches the religious evangelicals, and some conservatives, beliefs; fustration and fear will often turn to anger, and anger spreads like a disease in their community and uprises the most outspoken, most extreme-winged groups...and as these groups spring up...people who oppose the 'right' winged group form a 'left' wing group, then the right boosts it's ego to oppose the left and back and forth until you get boisterous religous right who fight with boisterous left...and we're stuck in the middle having to deal with the drama.
