Question:

How do you explain in a cover letter that you're going on vacation?

I'm looking to apply for several new jobs, and a couple have deadlines this week and next. I'll be applying, but won't be able to check phone messages next week while I am away on vacation. What is a good way to say I won't be available for any interviews for a week, or should I just not bother because it might turn away potential employers?

  1. If you're mailing out resumes, I wouldn't mention it.  It'll likely take them more than a week to get your resume in the right hands and make a decision to contact you.

Or are you filling out applications on-site for jobs?  If so, then I'd put "After September 1st" next to your phone number, so they know when they can reach you.

    I hope that helps!

  2. It would be a major turn off!  I wouldn't even look at your resume...

Your voicemail should say.  "I will be out and unavailable from September 1st thru September 5th.  All calls will be returned promptly on Monday September 8th."

You just need to remeber to change it back when you return...and keepit professional until you finished your job search.

  3. I think it would be a bad idea to put that in a cover letter.  You should go out of your way to check phone messages next week but also change your voicemail to say that you are having trouble retrieving messages or something like that.  If you really want a job, you're going to have to go above and beyond to cover this vacation up.  Get a calling card while you are on vacation and check your voicemails.

    Good luck.
