How do you explain the concept of evolution to a 5-year-old?

Question

So my little brother wanted to know "where do ALL the people in ALL the planet come from?". So we said God made people through evolution, but then we found ourselves having to explain evolution to him.

Now, I'm an anthro major and I would know how to explain this to an older person but I can't come up w/ a simple and straightforward way to explain this to my little one.

Any suggestions?

Just say that things change and become different over time.

JUST SAY THAT CREATURES ADAPTED (CHANGED)  AS THE EARTH CHANGED

Just say a long time ago all creatures were really similar, but to survive different kinds of animals got better at different things so they could survive, and eventually we had millions of different species.  It's short, sweet, and easy to understand.
