Question:

How do you explain the effect of a narrative point of view (1st, 2nd or 3rd point of view)?

And also for poetry studies.... how do you answer the question " What comments are the author making about the poem?" - Do i just write down what he says?

  1. First person, "me", gives the reader the feeling that he/she is actually experiencing the same thing as the author.  They're inside the story, living it.

    Second person, "one", is very distant and impersonal.  The author doesn't really refer to anyone specifically, so there's not much emotional involvement for the reader.

    Third person, "he" or "she", is sort of in between.  The reader gets to feel he/she is WATCHING the story happen, although it's happening to someone else.  The reader still gets to know the characters and feel more involved than second person, but the reader doesn't feel he's actually LIVING the story.
