How do you extract nicotine without a brown liquid mess?

I cooked the tobacco extract for over an hour careful not to boil it. After an hour I was left with a dark brown extract without the syrup effect.

Please have in mind that nicotine is highly toxic when extracted: it can be absorbed through the skin and by inhalation.
