How do you feel about education in the USA?

A lot of students in other countries wish to study in the United States, so I'm wondering, how important is education to you and do you think the US lets enough students from other countries, especially India and China, to have the opportunity to come study here?

I only ask because I was born in India, but raised in the US and I believe the education system here is great. I'm always hearing about how students in India and China don't have the money to study here or have immigration issues.

  1. There are lots of places at universities for people from overseas, because most universities, especially at the graduate level, accept qualified students regardless of where they are actually from. They want the most qualified students.

Certain institutions do limit the number of foreign applicants who can be admitted at the undergraduate level, but I don't have a problem with that. It's not necessarily the role of the US to educate foreign citizens. I believe that a US university degree, for a foreign citizen, is a privilege, not a right.

Most universities expect international students to be self-funding. Of course, there is no US government aid available to international students, and there is often little institutional aid from the university itself. Most foreign students (except at strong PhD programs) must pay for their own education. They often do this via family, or a corporate sponsor from home, or sponsorship from their home governments.

The immigration issues - that's to the student and the US government. Has nothing to do with the school.

  2. I have lived here all my life and love the benefits of our education system here. there is a reason everyone wants to come here to study. I believe it is mostly money and immigration issues holding back people from coming here to study, at least those who want to.

  3. I think the education here is great. I have learned A LOT! But something I think the USA should change is how long we go to school. 8 hours a day 7 days a week? That's too long.

  4. Nyaaaaa,

You're a wonderful American. I love your question. I'm always answering the questions regarding foreigners studying here by pointing out that they should get educated in their own countries.
