Should we eliminate them like Germanys autobahn and Italys autostrada? I know there are places such as Montana and other desolate areas where there are no speed limits but who drives their, I'm talking about making our popular expressways in our big cities like this.

  1. their necessary to have here in the states,if we didn't have them out death tolls would be ten times what it is right now, people here aren't ready for a no speed limit yet,you have to have a speed limit to help control traffic here in the states, its a necessary law, that we need to keep in force, good luck.

  2. there are speed limits on the highways...i thought those signs were only suggestions, because no one follows them anyways.  in some areas of the country traffic moves at a steady pace 10 to 30 mph over the speed limit

  3. The autobahn works so well because the drivers actually follow road rules and laws.  Until Americans get better (stop hogging the passing lane) and the cops actually enforce the rules, a speed limitless roadway won't work well, especially in higher-populated areas.

Anyway, a lot of the autobahns have speed limits around urban areas.  It's only in the less populated areas that the speed limits are lifted.

Dream on baby.  In germany their hwys are glass smooth. Our hwy are like back road bumpy.

In germany you don't get your license by learning from your father or brother.  You take professional course.  It cost something in the range of $4,000 USD (no this is not an optional course, EVERYBODY has to go through it).  They have lot less stupid drivers over there.

    Good Luck...

  5. Considering the way people drive at 65 speed limit.

Taking off the limits would be very very bad.

  6. while an autobahn type interstate system would be a good thing here in the states, it wont happen for a number of reasons;

1: our interstate highways are too rough for speeds above 80mph.

2: our interstate highways are too thin, 11 inches thick verses 27 inches thick for the autobahn.

3: our governments dont spend enough time or money on maintaining the system.

4: we have NO lane discipline in this country. too many people drive 55 in the fast lane regardless of the fact that they are slow traffic and are supposed to keep right.

5: law enforcement doesnt issue tickets like they should for lane violators, and other idiotic driving habits.

most people have a hard time just getting on the freeway, and you want them to be able to drive 150mph? you want the same people who talk on their cell phones, eat, put on makeup, read the paper, have s*x, and drink their favorite alcohol drive on the freeway at 150mph?

german automotive engineers once wondered why americans wanted cup holders in their cars because on the autobahn the drivers actually pay attention to their driving.

until we americans learn to pay 100% attention to our driving, and learn proper driving habits, including lane discipline and checking our mirrors on a regular basis rather than just once in a while, we need speed limits on our freeways. 65-70 is just fine for the quality of the average american driver think you. when we can get the fatality rate on americas highways below that of the autobahn, we shouldnt think about higher speeds.

  7. I think that if you eliminated speed limits, there would be WAY too many deaths in populated areas.

  8. speedlimits are too slow.

  9. Well, even Montana now has a speed limit of 75 which allows then to gain greater revenue through the writing of tickets. As for larger cities and urban areas, I think a reasonable speed limit is necessary due the the high occurrence of "road rage". As an interesting footnote, Texas now has the highest posted speed limit of any state at 80 mph on rural west Texas interstates such as portions of I-10 & I-20.

  10. If Americans drove like the Germans and other european countries then and only then would i want people to drive w/o a speed limit.  People don't seem to grab the concept of left lane is for passing.  And they certainly don't get it when you put your highbeams for them to move over to the right lane so they can let you pass. b/c in Europe, you don't have to put your high beams they actually know you are coming up behind them at a faster speed than you and actually move out of the way.  Plus, I honestly don't want some 16 year old punk who just got his license by driving around the block and now thinks he's mastered the art of driving speeding on the interstate... no thank you!!!!

Plus in Germany, their roads are impeccable!!!  You feel like your flying.  When I drove out there I had a Benz and it was like iwas in a plane didnt feel anything, and also, they have helicopters and medical stations all over the place and are able to arrive at the scene of an accident within 15min or less, ANYWHERe on the autobahn, plus they have cars/vans that can fix your car and get you back to driving again if something happens.

I think once the states actually have proper roads w/o pot holes and we dont have young punks whose parents just bought them a BMW M5 at the age of 16 years old, I don't want to be on the road with them without a speedlimit. I want proper rescue avail like they do in Germany and once I don't have to pass people on the right b/c they think they are going fast enough and think you are going too fast and want to police the roads... then and only then maybe I might think about it, till then... Speedlimits are NEEDED!
