Curious to see how other people feel about this trend. Unusual spelling, unusual names... Do you embrace this trend or do you have more classic, timeless roots?

  1. I do not really like made up names if they sound made up.

I like unique names, but I do not like it when people take regular names and make up their own spellings for them. It looks like a little kid who can't spell named them.

  2. I HATE it!!!!!!!! WHy not just use a classic name?!

  3. I don't really like them... It's almost impossible to remember how to spell some of them.... But I don't like the really popular, almost overused ones either.

  4. I am fine with the different spellings, as long as they are not way out there. But I don't like the unusual names or 'made-up' names as you put it. I think that it is just a tad too weird.

  5. Classic and traditional names only in my house for first names!  I cannot stand all the made up names, like Nevaeh, that are flying around.  I also don't like the weird y's in names, like Lauryn or Madyson.

My kids are Olivia and Natalie.  Original spellings.  We feel they are classy and timeless and names our girls can grow into.  Afterall, they will be adults much longer than they will be children.

  6. I'm personally not into this trend (I love old-fasioned/family names).  But I can see where people are coming from with the idea.  It's nice to know that parent's are trying to make their children unique and stand out, even if it is just a name and the name turns out to be, well, c**p.

One thing that people should consider when considering an out-there name is this.

-Make it easily legible and spellable.  I have a very common name (Sarah) and still have to remind people how to spell it (with an H), so I know those really far out spellings have to be an inconvenience for those kids at least some of the time

-Don't make the name similar to a word/concept/etc that seems vulgar or insulting.

-As for classic name with a different spelling:  if the name itself is not enough to be original, how about considering a different name?  (Actually, going back to the first point)

  7. that all depends on the name,I don't like all the unusual spellings and parents trying to hard to be unique but sometimes a made up name looks and sounds nice but also has special meaning to the parents.I cant stand nevaeh, apple, honey, Jayshon and other stupid names

my oldest son though has a made up name I have only ever heard compliments bout his name and it also has a very special meaning to me and my husband

when I was 6 months pregnant I almost lost him and had to be rushed to hospital,my husband had just left me 2 days before hand so I was pretty stressed out,to start with the doctor said i had appendicitis and would need to have it taken out ,the midwife on the other hand didn't believe this was the case and sent me for an ultrasound it turned out that I had an kidney infection and my sons heart rate was very low due to fetal hypoxia(lack of oxygen),the midwife called my husband in and told him that our son had a 50/50 chance of surviving and that he should be there with me during this time, she talked him into coming in and then got the doctor to talk to us about what risks our son had and what needed to be done, that night my husband and I sorted our problems out and got back together,I was on strict bed rest and had to see a doctor once a week to check our sons heart rate but our son lived and was born 2 weeks overdue weighing 8 pound 4 ounces,he is now a happy healthy 4yr old boy,we named him after the midwife that saved his life, her name was Kylie Anessa and our sons name is Kyane( kye ahn),my husband and I are still together and now have 2 other children Alexander and Joshua, without that midwifes quick thinking my son might not be here and there is no knowing if my husband and I would have got back together and sorted our problems out

  8. i have on rare occasion heard names i would have never thought of- both made up and not.  i think ocean is a beautiful names for a little girl.  and a friend could decide between taylor and kaylen so she named her girl taylen, which i thought was pretty.  the worst name i have heard in the past year or two is nevaeh! who thought this was cute?! it would be better just left as heaven.  its tacky and trashy and sounds ignorant- the spelling is ugly too.  that one i really wish would go away! every little girl in school in the next five years will have that name! then it wont be so original will it?!

i think different and original is good and i also like timless traditional names.

  9. I think it's a nice idea, but when put into practice, people tend to go overboard. A unique name can propel you forward in some industries and squash you prematurely in others.

Some people should stick to naming animals or cartoon characters, though, and let someone else name their kids.

  10. I really don't like made-up names. Having an unusual (but not made up) name myself,  I think it's an unfair burden to put on kids. No one likes having to constantly repeat their name and spell it out, nor have people ask "Are you serious?" and "What were your parents thinking?!".

  11. I'm not sure about "made-up" names.. I guess I'd have to see them... but I'm all for mixing up the spelling as longs as it's phonetically correct. i.e.... my second daughter is Adisynn instead of Addison. But it still looks the way it's "supposed" to be said.  But I also love uncommon names! My first daughter is Avianna.

So I really think it all depends on the name.............

  12. It's awful, I also cannot stand the name Nevaeh. Urgh! People need to start giving their kids proper names.

  13. I dont really care for it

  14. Ick. I detest this trend. And I can't stand the rebuttle that all names were at one time "made-up". They weren't. Names are derived from words and languages, not random syllables that "sounded cute" together. I think made-up names are pretty selfish, too. How many adults with made-up names claim to like them? Not too many. It's a way for the parents to show their "creativity" through their kid, which isn't very fair, in my opinion. Besides, naming your daughter Jaylynn doesn't make her more unique than naming her Elizabeth. People are people; we are all unique.

  15. I hate the made-up names. Imagine a 30 year old with the name MyKenzi. Terrible, right? I like the classic names, like Elizabeth.

  16. It depends on the name. A lot of them, however, may be cute for a kid but not for an adult who needs to get a job and be taken seriously.

  17. I like both funky trend and classic trend.

  18. I cannot stand when people ask about made-up names on here.

  19. I really dislike it.  I also dislike odd spellings.  It makes me think the parents don't know how to spell.

My sons are Elijah and Noah.

  20. I roll my eyes at the made-up names... but in reality, every name was "made up" at some point in history, right?  So I guess there's nothing wrong with it.

  21. HATE THIS TREND

NEVAEH?? ugh.. dont get me started.

if it is heaven backwards, that means it's the opposite of heaven, right? and the opposite of HEAVEN is HECK.

and you dont hear educated people going around naming their kids Nevaeh

  22. I have a daughter with a made up name, but it has special meaning to my fiance and I.  I didn't just throw a bunch of letters together and say "OMGz that's so kyoot!" like the teenage trailer trash moms do.

Otherwise, I'm open to all kinds of names as long as they aren't trendy, overused, and dated.  I can't stand all this Nevaeh, Charlee, Kyliee, -ayden names, boys names on girls, Ryder, and Riley c**p.

  23. It is annoying as h**l

  24. Terrible!!! I read an article, don't remember if it was on Yahoo or MSN, about a girl that was named Tula does the Hula and it was taken to court and the name was changed.

  25. you must be really boring...or old...or both.

  26. I hate the whole made-up names, stupid spellings trend.  I like classic names that aren't absolutely ridiculous.
