I honestly feel as though we should have boycotted the games. The chinese government doesn't believe in things such as human rights. I see all these posts about America and our government and whats wrong over here. OK lets get one thing straight the games aren't being held over here, they are being held over in China where they abuse the rights of their people. Why is it ok to celebrate and hold such a great event over in a country that treats their people like slaves?? There's nothing ok with that. Their government abuses the rights of the Chinese and we are helping promote it. I guarantee you that they're are plenty of people who didn't preform as they should have or who messed up who are going to pay the price after all this. You people who bash our country here, yes we have plenty of things wrong in our government and what not, but not to the extent that they have over there in China. So who else feels like the games shouldn't have been held over in Beijing and we should have boycotted the games like we did in the 1960's?

  1. how do u know they treat their people like slaves, all the chinese people i have met are just like regular folks over here, i have even lived over there for 5 years, china is nothing like the US media's blown out of proportion, human rights abusing dictatorship.

they view their government just like we do here, a kind of a pain at times. but mostly they are satisfied with the direction their country is heading, only thing i see controversial is the manipulation of currency, purposely suppressing the income and living standard of its people, keeping their currency low relative to the dollar, just to gain an enormous advantage in international trading. very cunning, but bad for its people and consumers over here.

  2. I dont think we should have boycotted the olympics games, but i do agree with you about how people are always bashing the US and our government even though China's is much worse.

  3. The Chinese government always receive negative criticism regarding their human rights policy.  But one thing we all need to understand (at least try to) is the fact that China has the largest population in the world.  Most of them are really poor.  If you are the Chinese government, how would you govern the nation?  What policy will you set to prevent crimes, when majority of the citizens are in poverty?

Other nations that criticize how bad the Chinese government are with human rights policy just simply never thought about governing 1.3 billion people.

And No, the Olympic games should not be boycotted.  The Olympic has nothing to do with politics, it simply host great world sporting events.  Boycotting the Olympic in the 21st century is foolish for any nation.

  4. Where do u get your information from? What is china doing to there people? In every country there are some injustice against humans believe it or not... Even in your country where racism is so dominant. That means olmpics cant be held anywhere in the world .... so just pray for the people in china and get over yoursself.... and suppoort your country's athlete who work so hard.

secondly.. not because the olympics is being held in China means that the whole world support their wrong doing... look outside the box

  5. I do. Simply because any medal contender who does not win a medal their life will be over.

  6. There was hundreds of Bibles confiscated at the airport.

    That's enough right there.

  7. you're really immature...i mean don't politicize the olympics please it aint a good reason to boycott the olympics just because its held in china, none of their own problems concern the olympics so keep it out of it

im glad we didnt boycott the games or we would appear as stuck up childish idiots

  8. It's mostly the westerners who feel that Chinese people have NO human rights. That they are slaves and blah blah. FYI, the Pew Research Center (an independent research group) survey the Chinese people and found out that 8 out of 10 of them are satisfied with the Chinese government. Where do you get your news my friend? From biased western reporters who don't know too much about China and its culture? Please get your facts straight before you complain. For a country of 1.3 billion people, the Chinese government is doing a great job uplifting its people from poverty. And when your country's biggest problem is having enough food to eat or ensuring a decent livelihood, then the biggest priority would be the economy, not the western values of "human rights." Don't you think having enough food to eat and decent clothes on your back should be the biggest human right of all? Who has the energy to think about "freedom" and whatnot when you're hungry?

Edit: Oh please. The one child policy is a necessity. Without it, life for the average Chinese person would be even worse as there would be more competition, more pollution, and more mouths to feed. It's so easy to live in a rich land full of opportunities and tell other people what they should do. Sure, China can do away with the one child policy if the US would eliminate their restrictions on Chinese immigration. Then we would get even more Americans complaining about how the Chinese are taking away their jobs and whatnot. Either way, people would complain about China.

  9. So boycotting a sports competition would magically convince their authoritarian communist government to give their people more civil rights?

So theoretically, the world wide protest of the Iraq War should've prevented the invasion, correct?

If it didn't even work for us, a democracy, how do you expect boycotts to work for China?

The fact remains, yes, the mainland Chinese government treats its people badly. However, the vast majority of their citizens also support the Olympics, because they see it as a way to open their country to the rest of the world. They see it as an opportunity to connect to other nations, improve their lives and the lives of their children, and perhaps eventually change their government for the better.
