As the Olympics draw nearer, the media covers numerous stories of horrible pollution in china. In shanghai, living and breathing the air for a week has been compared to smoking a whole pack of cigarettes! their pollution is so bad that its been theorized that some of their air pollution is being carried across the ocean, as far as the US! The fastest man in the world, from Ethiopia, refuses to run his event in the Olympics for fear of damage to his lungs. What does the pollution in China mean to you?

  1. ironicly they have the coldest winter for 50 years and people are saying it is due to global warming.. jesus crist any more of global warming im going to FREEZE TO DEATH!

Edit: I just said this because it is in global warming section

but what i feel about the polution is..its TERRIBLE! China MUST fix this problem..

  2. s***w china,we have enough of our own problems that need taking care of.

  3. The above responder doesn't understand the difference between weather (e.g. a cold winter) and climate (the average of weather over a period of 30+ years).  Global warming is happening, but it's a slow process and we'll still experience cold weather, it's only the long-term average over the entire surface that's it increasing at a noticeable rate.

That said, having flown into SE Asia several times the pollution in the atmosphere over there is unbelievable.  It reminds me of a bad day in the Los Angeles basis 25 years ago, but it's over a much larger area.  China needs to manage their growth and the effect it has on our environment or the consequences could be serious (not just global warming, but the pollutants that flow across the Pacific to the US).  I was glad to read last week that China is partnering with an Australian company to experiment with carbon sequestion, which is critical given the number of new coal-based power plants they are building.

  4. Any Co2 or pollution released into the atmosphere is mixed in and spread quickly, be it from China to the U.S or the U.S. to China as both countries have similar outputs of Co2, and it only takes, at most ,a couple of weeks for the atmosphere to travel right round the planet.

And for the record Haile Gebrselassie isn't the fastest man in the world he is a marathon runner not a sprinter, and he is going to run the 10000m instead.
