The first item to be rationed is rice. Costco, and Sam's Club are rationing the number of bags a person can purchase (4 bags).

  1. I didn't know this  Maybe there is something we don't know I will check this week I'm going shopping and Sam's club doesn't have sales on anything it's this price or not

  2. that is news to me- I called Sam's and they say is not so

  3. There are two ways to handle a pinch in supply.  Raise prices, or ration.  Raising prices is the AMERICAN way.  Rationing is the socialist way.

Rationing is wrong on several fronts.  It encourages cheating.  It encourages a black market.  It is unproductive and does nothing to encourage conservation.

If rice is such a hot commodity then the price needs to go UP.  This will encourage more rice production.

  4. Unless we get our population growth down.. it is estimated that we all will be eating cat and dog like in China - urban spawl is consuming farm land.. we will need more land to grow food for us.. so less land will be for cattle.. thus beef will be $$$$.. so we will be eating cat and dog...

Maybe McDonalds should start rationing French Fries - so we dont have so many fatties...

  5. Are you sure it is not a sales limit of 4 bags, buy more at a higher price;  besides I think 200 lbs. of rice a day is plenty.

I am more worried about the hungry kids in the third and second world, not the first world.

If by limiting a few bags of rice in the US saves someone from dieing, I am all for it.

  6. Well if it's true, then I guess you can always bring reusable bags or something.

  7. This is rather a mis-use of the word "rationing."  There is still no limit to how much rice you can buy - only a limit on how much Costco will sell you.  If you want more rice, you just head down the street to the Piggly-Wiggly and get yourself more rice.   No problem.

Many many stores limit the amount you can purchase of particular items.   Things on sale often have a limit per customer.   Things that are scarce (like a Wii) might have a limit per customer.    Bars may limit the number of drinks that they will sell a single customer, and concert ticket vendors often restrict ticket sales to a certain number per order.

Traditionally, rationing means that the government or ruling authority limits the amount of something that you can purchase from any source at all.

How do I feel about Costco being able to decide how much rice they are willing to sell people?   I have no problem with it at all.

    Good question.

  8. That is not rationing - they do the same thing for packs of toilet paper at the grocery store - limit 8 packs per person when it is on sale.

Rationing is way more restrictive than that. Ask someone who lived through WW2.

  9. A quick Google (oops, is that a bad word here?) of "us food rationing" brought forth a news report stating that since the price of rice has risen 68% since the beginning of the year, restaurants and small stores have been buying rice in large quantities.  This is not actually a ration, simply the stores trying to give everyone a chance to get their groceries without the larger purchasers buying them out.

68% since the beginning of the years is pretty scary though...it's not even May yet.
