  1. It's different for diffferent people, Restuarant industry people normally tip up 25% sometimes more. The average diner tips 15 to 20%.  A buffet, I leave about 10% because you do most of the work, and they get paid on a different scale then other service resturants.


  2. I double the tax at a restaurant where there is table service and the waitress / waiter did a good job. I only leave a couple of dollars at a buffet.

A tip should always be 20% or better.  If the service is bad than the tip should be 12-15%.  Tip on the total of the bill....some cheapos tip on food only.  People...waitstaff serve the drinks you are getting bombed on...so tip for the service!!  And remember from your tip waitstaff are required to tip 20% out to busboys, bartenders and sometimes hostesses.  So do the math  your $10 tip is split $2 to busboys, $2 to bartenders, and $2 to hostesses.  That leaves $4 to the person that served you.

  4. In the good old USA: Ten percent is the default amount. Give this if you were served. Giving a fifteen percent means: I was well served. The waiter/waitress did more than their basic duties in tending to my needs. Giving a twenty-percent tip means: I feel special and well-treated. This waiter/waitress is on the ball. EXCEPTIONS: If you are at the table for a very long time! (like 2 or three hours). If that happens, make it worth their while. BASIC IDEA: Be generous, but let your generosity reflect back to them how you 'rate' their attention to their task. BUFFETS? I had no idea!

  5. It should be 15-20 percent so usually you can double the tax, depending on what your tax rate is.  Mine is 8.75 so doubling that is more than enough...Also, for a buffet yes I do leave a small tip...

  8. I tip about 20% these days. I figure out ten percent of my bill and double it. Not hard. If you're a 15%-er, figure the ten, then add about half, going up for a round number.

    At a buffet, if someone clears away my used dishes and brings water, maybe rolls, like that, I tip 10%.

    Waitresses and waiters make terrible money, and the work is hard.

  9. I put 15% and yes you do need it for a tip. But then, some cultures like giving 10%. Tip is really up to you. Since tip is basically how well you think their service was. If you thought their service was great 13% excellent 15% or others. I'd recommend AT LEAST a 5% tip.

  10. The norm. is about 15 percent of the bill. I leave a tip at a buffet, if they have actually waited on you.

    Over here in the UK, most people I know any myself tip 10% unless it's been a VERY good meal, in which case it's usually 10% plus whatever you feel like giving.

    For a buffet, I usually just leave a couple of quid on the table if i've been served well by the person who does the clearing away and bringing drinks, but if they're sullen or rude they get nada.

    I'm generous with tips - if I bother it's almost always way more than 10% but if the waiter/ress or the barman/maid isn't happy and pleasant (i've done both jobs, I know it's hard but it's possible!) or the food's bad, I won't leave even a small tip because I think it should be a reward for a job well done, not something that should be expected.

    DON'T tip in Sweden. I'm told it's a TERRIBLE slur on the establishment, you're implying they don't pay their staff enough!
