A co-worker of mine has been driving on a six months past-due tag.

I asked him why he hasn't got his new Florida tag yet,he said that he was un-able to apply for a out of state lost title.

Is this true, that a title search is not available across state lines?

Or is he lieing?

  1. I don't know what other state's capability is but it is true that you cannot get another states title from a state the vehicle is not registered at. Your friend will have to obtain a dup title from CA DMV and might actually have to pay penalties on past due reg unless he/she was paying a non-op to state that the vehicle was not in use. In any case, they will have to fill out the form and send it to the CA DMV with the fee to obtain a dup title. Also, keep in mind that if there was a lien holder on the title paid off or not they will have to get a lien satisfied from the lien holder showing that they released their interest in the vehicle. Hope all this made sense.

P.S. I worked for the DMV way back when
