  1. Hiring from an agency could allow numerous individuals to come in and out all the time.

So look for a reputable agency, or hire someone through word of mouth, that can come every day steadily.

Do a background check on the person.

Invite them over at a minimum of twice before they begin working for you.

Introduce them to your parent and leave them to talk for awhile to see how they interact.

Sit down and have a long discussion with them about your parent.

Help to familiarize them with your parent before they were sick.

My dad was a plumber for thirty years. He served in the war. He met my mom in 1960. They fell in love in New York and married in 1962. They raised 3 children. He used to love to paint. He enjoys watching classic movies. He loves peas and liver. Etc...

This will allow the caregive to see your parent as a friend instead of as a job!

Leave the caregiver a checklist of things that you expect. Go over those things with the agency or individual before you hire from them.

Check in on the caregiver and parent.

Buy the caregiver flowers or small trinkets of gratitude every once in a while, so that they know that their caring ways are appreciated.

When a person loves their job...they work to please the employer.

    Best wishes

BTW: You can also check with the department of aging for references.

  2. I get this service 5 days a week, from Nurses Care. So try Counsel On Aging and look them up in the phone book or Senior Services. They should be able to provide a service you can use.

Make sure they do the work, had and have some workers that want you to sign paperwork that states they did services and didn't do it at all.

I have had to wash dishes that are dirty that have been placed in the cupboard.

Look there are services you can get for your father, Visiting Physicians, Klosterman Food Delivery Visiting Podietry......Podiatryneeds a shower chair and shower  hose that you can hold while showering, potty chair, walker, cain, grabber, etc. oh oxygen, sleep disorder, diabetis, theydiabetesell you and sometimes that angers me, it's like you have to guess.

didn't mean to go so long, but I don't know his needs and maybe he can use some of the things I am now having to use.  I have passport because I am now 60yrs and have Medicaid & Medicare.  Good Luck

  3. I would chose a reputable agency, such as a home health care agency.  There the personal workers are certified by the state, also they have had a back ground check done on them.  You can never be too chosey when it comes to your loved one, ask for references.  Best of luck!

Also, the chances of medicaid helping with the bills is greater with an existing agency, versus hiring someone on your own.

I am a certified nurses assistant.

  4. I've been looking for work like that, and it's so hard. ( for me that is ..I love older people =))

But I would look for someone who has empathy and sympathy for older people , PATIENCE IS ESSENTIAL . Out going happy people, honest , loyal .Trustworthy . And someone who has the experience with the elderly and even with children b/c if they have that experience then they most likely know how to be with the elderly.

Unless you just higher a CNA ..and maybe a little course work , some type of training .
