The best way is to GUESS how to spell the last name.  

Sound it out.   Try different variations.   Use the phone book online so you don't kill anyone with a huge phone bill.  

If you can get the first 5 letters, you'll likely have some success on google and it will help you figure out the spelling or at least the accepted variations  i.e. like Anderson and Andersen  are both accepted spelling of last names and both sound alike.

Also, ask someone you think might know the spelling.
