  1. I think electrons are  the same quantity as the neutrons, the displacement depends on the number of protons and a number, ( which i think i remember was 1.3 but it's been a long time.)

  2. Electron Configuration Notation:

Energy Levels:  Are numbers 1,2,3,4 up to 7

Sublevels or orbitals: Are letters s,p,d,f

As energy levels increase they hold additional sublevels.

This energy level… |  has these sublevels

                1                    |            s

                2                    |           s, p

                3                    |        s, p, d

                4                    |       s, p, d, f

Each sublevel holds a certain number of electrons.

    S holds 2

    P holds 6

    D holds 10

    F holds 14

    Example:  Electron configuration for Oxygen

Atomic number is 8.  Therefore there are 8 protons.

An element has a neutral charge, so there also must be 8 electrons.

    1s2 2s2 2p3

*Notice that the p orbital is not completely filled.  That’s OK.  You can not give the atom more electrons that it naturally has.  It wants to fill its orbital completely and will accomplish this by bonding with another atom.
