How do you find out about a death via online for free?

The only way I know of is to check out the online newspapers, they have the notices of deaths and funerals etc., if the person is a star its on most of the news sites, all of these are free, but if you want to know the cause of someones death and arent a family member, I dont know how you could find out, maybe the coroner could help! :)

Try doing a search using:

death index

as the search terms.  You will get a lot of hits, some for states.  If you know the state you ought to be able to zero in.

There is also the SSA death index (see below).
