I'm looking into buying a used 30D, and I'm wondering whether there's way you can tell without sending it to Canon or whatever.

  1. Have you tried looking at the EXIF data on your files?  Some cameras keep track of then in a special location in that data.   There are EXIF "readers" that can let you see every thing it contains.  Opanda is one.

You are looking for a listing called .... Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera = 1234 or some other number.

  2. take a pic and look at the file number.

the counter does NOT reset when you pull the memory card but it can be reset in the menu options.

  3. IIRC Canon doesn't have it set up so you can tell. Once you take the memory card out the counter resets.
