How do you find out your heritage if you dont know the member of the family?

My dad doesn't know his dad...and we don't know what ethnicity he was....how can you find out what you are if you don't know the person? is there any other way to find out

You can't. If your dad's birth certificate says "Unknown" where the father's name, age, birth place (and in some countries and some years, race, occupation and religion) usually go, you are stuck.

A $300 DNA test would give you some broad clues, but nothing specific.

You could get a DNA test from one of those companies that sells them. They will tell you which general area of the earth your ancestors came from
