There are many companies offering DNA tests that can help you learn more about your heritage.

Great news for African Americans like myself, because it is nearly impossible to figure out which nation in Africa your ancestors were from, via written records.

They have tests that can determine what percentage of your blood is what ethnicity... (For example: 25% American Indian, 50% West African, 25% Irish,etc...)

Then there are tests that can trace either your strictly maternal line (Your mother's mother's mother's mother...) or your strictly paternal line. (Your father's father's Father's father...)

*** Note: if you are female you have to ask a male blood  relative, to take the paternal test for you. (i.e. father, grandpa).  cause only men carry the Y chromosome...

Many white people have been shocked to discover recent connections to African Americans/ Africa... And many blacks are amazed to find their paternal line leads back to Europe. It's all VERY fascinating...

In addition to this if you look at your hair under a microscope you can get a small clue... there is a stick that should appear in the follicle if you have any American Indian or Asian blood. Black people and White people do not naturally have it.

I consider myself African American, but when I did that, I found out I had to be part American Indian/Asian because my hair had that stick.... Sorry I was SO long but I hope I helped!

Do your geneological research. Starting with your parents, their parents and continue going back. Their birth certificates will give you a good guidance at where to look for the information you seek. Knowing your families sir names will help establish your families orgins. You would need time to go to a good library that has the resources for geneology research. A lot of people do their research and post it on line at rootsweb.com.
