How do you find percents?

a) What is 85% of 800? b) 44 is what percent of 132?

c) 90 is 75% of what? D) What is 5% of 40?

The easiest way to solve these problems is to set up a proportion, then cross multiply.

Use  %  =  is

    -------     ---------

    100        of

% / 100 = is / of

a) 85/100 = x / 800

100 x = 85 * 800

Then divide both sides by 100

b) x / 100 = 44 / 132

To find percents, remember this simple "formula":

(percent)/100 = (is)/(of)

Or:

(percent)/100 = (part)/(whole)

For example, in a, we know percent (85), we know whole/"of" (800), so plug it in:

85/100=(part)/800

Then just multiply both sides by 800, in this case. Depending on the information you have, you may need to cross-multiply.
