How do you find the average speed of something?

problem: A train travels 800 miles in 120 minutes.

I'm not looking for the answers just how to find it.

  1. No, the first answer is correct Average Speed= Distance divided by Time


  2. Basically you break up the distance you traveled by each unit of time.  In other words you divide the distance by the time.

    In your case, however, since your time is in minutes the answer would be in miles-per-minute.

    I'm guessing you want the answer in miles-per-hour, so to convert from miles-per-minute to miles-per-hour you divide the miles-per-minute by 60 (the number of minutes in an hour).

  3. average speed = (total distance)/(change in time)

    =]

  4. speed = distance/time

    so speed = 800/2(hours)

                  = 400 mph.

    Thats a pretty fast train!
