How do you find the equation and answer to this story problem?

Coffee A, worth 75 cents per pound, is blended with coffee B, worth 95 cents per

pound, to obtain 24 pounds of a mixture worth 90 cents per pound. How many

pounds of each were used?

Whats the equation and answer for this, can you also please tell me the steps of how you got it too. Thank you!

  1. I'm not going to solve it for you, but these should be the steps:

    x= lbs of A

    y= lbs of B

    there are two given formulas:

    x+y=24

    .75x+.95y=.9(24)

    so solve one for x:

    x=24-y

    and substitute that x into the other formula:

    .75(24-y)+.95y=21.6

    now solve for y, then plug the y value into one of the formulas to solve for x.

    i think this is right, though it's been a while since i've done this type of thing.  it's the right idea, definitely, and at least earns partial credit.
