If you're given hydrogen fluoride or hydrogen chloride how do you know what the chemical compound is...like HF how do you know there is one hyd and on Flourine

  1. some examples

    h2o: 2 hydrogen 1oxygen

    h2so4: 2 hydrogen 1 sulfur 4 oxygen

    if there is a number after the element symbol, that is the number of atoms of that element in the compound. one is not written if only one is contained.

    a visual of the above examples:

    H-H-O....it's easier to write H2O

    H-H-(S-O-O-O-O) for H2SO4

    like test for Cl... you can check if you have Cl in your soln
