How do you find your GPA from your transcript?

I would assume that there is a standardized way of doing this in the U.S. Do they typically average the two semester grades from a class into one for your transcript?

  1. Typically, yes, the transcript would show one grade for one course.  Usually, an A = 4, B 3, C 2 and D 1, and of course F 0.  Add all the points and divide by the number of courses.  Carry the result to three decimal places.  Sometimes though, if there are honors courses or AP courses an A might be 5 instead of 4 and a B 4 instead of 3 and so on.  But an F is still 0.

I'm not totally certain, but I think most US transcripts show the GPA at the bottom, along with the person's position (ranking) in the graduating class (like 38th out of 247 or something), and any honors they earned.
