How do you fit a show helmet for hunter/jumpers?

I will have to have my hair in a hair net. Will this affect my helmet sizing? My current schooling helmet, a troxel, is a 7 1/4 with heavy padding. How do I measure my head?

  1. You need to take into consideration the thickness of your hair! I have a Charles Owen 6 7/8 which is what i was measured for and my hair fits perfectly up in it, but I do have fine hair. Your best best would be to try on the helmets with your hair tucked up in, different brands fit differently...I would deff. reccomend the Charles Owen helmets!

  2. i would go to a tack store and find the helmet you are planning on getting ... then try it on with a hair net and ur hair tucked up underneath and find the size that fit... then order it out of a catalog or whatever you were going to do... trying it on is the best option though, because some helmets run a little bit big or a little bit small...

    hope it helps!

  3. Yes, having your hair up will affect the sizing.  Measure yourself with your hair up, and make sure when you're trying on helmets that your hair is up the same way it will be for shows.

Is the padding in the Troxel removeable/positionable?  Many helmets today have that feature, which helps a lot.

  4. Do you put your hair up in your troxel? If not, does it go up if you take out the padding? Use the 7 1/4 as a reference. Go down to 7 1/8 if your hair fits even with all the padding.

  5. You can measure but if you have a odd size (such as a long oval ,meaning your skull is longer from back to front then normal) you'll want to try on a few different sizes.Troxel makes a helmet with a dial that tightens and loosens the band. These are great for adjusting tightness if you wear your hair up one day and down the next

  6. take a tape measure and measure the diameter and then u can google charts on what ur size is....i would list the chart here but i dont feel like it haha but yes measure it and then maybe add 1/8 of an inch for your hair
