Question:

How do you fix a bike gear?

My sister and her friend broke my bike. I don't know how. There's something sticking out (more like sticking downward) from the gear holding the chain on the back wheel, and that has caused the chain to loosen, making it so I can't ride my bike. I've tried to push that up and back where it is supposed to go, but its not working. How can I fix it?

  1. I would take a picture of the parts at the rear wheel. It will help us determine what's wrong.

  2. You don't fix it yourself. You take it to your friendly local bike shop, where they have the tools, parts, and expertise to fix it.

  3. ...a pic and better description would help.  But, if you have a single speed bike with coaster brake (you pedal backward to stop the bike), then what you're looking at may be the coaster brake lever, which is usually secured to the bike frame with a loop of metal...sometimes the s***w and nut work loose and the loop of metal slips off, making the bike brake fail.

You'll need to replace the s***w and nut, secure the lever back in place, and you're done.  Hope that's it!
