I have M-Audio Studiophone DX4 speakers that i hooked up to my computer. I am pretty sure they blew out during a party and now they won't turn on. How do you fix blown-out speakers/ how expensive is it?

  1. There are places that recone burned out speakers.  The cost is around half the cost of new speakers.  See link.

To verify if they are blown, connect a small battery, like a flashlight battery, or a small 9 volt battery across the speaker terminals and listen for a thud in the speakers.  If you do not hear it, the speaker is blown.  If you hear the thud, the speaker is not blown.

  2. Hi There...

Speakers that are "Blown" have been damaged by Direct Current (DC)...DC can come from clipping the amplifier or by distorting the sound...This burns out the speakers "Voice Coil", the coil of wire attached to the apex of the cone of a loudspeaker. It provides the motive force to the cone by the reaction of a magnetic field to the current passing through it.

In order to replace the voice coil, you'd have to take the speaker to a repair shop that does this kind of work...Most concert sound companies can do this - its a specialty service...

When the shop replaces the voice coil, they will also need to re-cone the speaker, as in order to get to the coil, they have to remove the cone...

Its not a cheap endeavor, as you only really see this repair on home hi-fi speakers or concert rigs...You'll have to weigh the idea with simply buying a new pair...Depending on what you have, it may be ALLOT cheaper...

    Happy Listening...CP
