  2. Thrust and lift must overcome weight and drag.  Thrust is the force foreward, drag is the opposing force backwards.  Lift is the thrust up, and drag is the opposing force down.  If the thrust and lift are greater than the other two, you achieve flight.

    Since the human body is incapable of doing this on it's own, you need a device such as a jet or glider.  Otherwise, visit your local travel agent.

The Bernoulli's principle is used in the wings of a airplane and the rotor of a helicopter blade.  The wings and blades are shape in such a way as to reduce air pressure above it and increase the air pressure beneath it when  moving through air. This uneven balance of air pressure creates lift (force)

  7. Everything humans (and birds) use for flying is based on one idea: creating a pressure difference.

    Pressure, is a force applied over a given area. If the force on the bottom side of a given area is greater than the force on the top side, then there is a net force on that area is upwards. That area - and whatever it is attached to - is lifted up.

    What we - and birds - use to create this pressure difference is the air in our atmosphere. We use wings, like birds, to create large spans of area, and design the wings such that the air moving across the wing on top is faster that the air moving across the wing on the bottom. Faster air puts less pressure on the wings than slower air, and the net force of the air pushes upward on thw wings.

    Now the wing areas are big, and thier weight so light, that there is enough upward thrust to lift things that the wings are attached to - such as the body of plane or a bird.

    This principle is also used in helicopters and hot air balloons. In helicopters, the spinning blades are at angle and the air hitting the bottom surface slows down and gets thrust downward, while air flows fast down the top surface creating a difference in pressure that results in a thrust upwards.

    Similarly, hot air balloon create, well, hot air, and since hot air is less dense that air in atmosphere, there is a pressure difference between the inside of the ballon and the outside, creating a net upward thrust on the surface of the balloon. The balloon has a big surface area and is very light so there is enough thrust left over to carry any extra stuff it is attached to - like a basket full of people looking for a fun ride.

    So that is how people - and birds - fly by simply creating pressure difference.
