Question:

How do you fog your cylinders?

Ok, I winterized my engine today, but I get so aggravated when I go to fog the cylinders. I have a 350 mercruiser (GM), and the 8 spark plugs are underneath the exhaust manifolds. I can't see them, I have to feel for them, and on top of that, I barely have enough room to fit my arm between the manifolds and the space between my deck (hatch style). Then, I try to use the can of fogging fluid with the little red spray extender attached, and find and reach the cylinder hole. Is there a better way to do this? I almost started throwing tools today! 2 or 3 cylinders I seriously doubt I even got any fluid into them!

  1. Hi

The best way I know of to fog an inboard like your describing is to take about 8 to 12 ounces of fogging oil in a cup and as the engine is on high idle pour it directly down the throat of the carb and shut it down. The engine may die on you when you do this so remember to shut the key off after your done. .........Hope this helps.......Tootall

  2. suggest you log on to i boat .com. tells how in detail.also mercruiser.com.

  3. If this is a form of upper cylinder lubricant for keeping the cylinder walls lubricated and rust free can't  you just spray into the inlet of the carb or air intake while cranking the engine over?

I used to do this when I was winter servicing my outboard motor..... while it was running in fresh water. I'd pump UCL into the carb until the engine was really smoking then stop it and strip down the carb and clean that out. Change the spark plugs, grease everything. Then strip the lower leg, clean out the water pump and coat that with vaseline or something similar....  I never had a problem with starting and running the next season.

  4. We have always added the fogging oil into the intake.

Just spray it into the silencer.

In the spring the unit should start right up.

Don't forget to drain the engine block (both sides) and exhaust manifolds.
