How do you get a book published?

I would like to write and illustrate just a small book about beach living. It would be very short and sold at gift shops....how do you get this published? Thanks!

I would suggest checking out self-publishing also called 'vanity publishing'.  Make sure you find a reputable company, go to webrings, group chats, and the websites listed below to get recommendations.  Ideally with vanity press you pay for as few as 25 copies up to 200.  You pay them a fee in advance but the editing is up to you so make sure it's real clean.  Since you're an illustrator you'd make your own cover artwork.

     Since you're paying them for all the copies you don't have to worry about a royalties check.  Whatever you sell is your profit.  Asking stores to stock it and sell it also means that you get to decide exactly where you want your book and you can keep track of how many copies are being sold monthly and whether or not they need more or if you need to move them to another location.  If the work is that good and you want a big publisher to put it out for you or a national scale you will now know how many units will move, the audience you sell to, the best marketing and you'll have a nice neat product for them to look at.  Entering into a publishing contract means that now they will do the editing, distributing even though you will still have to promote and you only get a percentage of the royalties once you pay back  your advance.
