How do you get a briggs and stratton starter gear off?

  1. With a wheel/pulley puller.  It is a tool with 3-4 self-adjusting heavy duty hooks attached to a hub with a bolt in the center.  Turn the bolt to cause the hooks to attach to the gear with pressure, then use a wrench/socket on the bolt to force the gear slowly off the keyed shaft.

    You can get them fairly (~$30 range) cheaply at any auto-parts stores such as auto zone / napa or tool stores such as harbor freight / northern tool.
