  1. It may be a couple reasons, heat, not getting regular baths, or stress.

As far as the bath part goes, they need a dust bath. NEVER use water.

  2. I have chinchillas too and they shed as well and theres not really anything you can do about it but if all their hair is coming out then you should ask your vet!!!!! cause there might be something wrong!!!

  3. There are a few main reasons chinchillas "shed":

    1. Skin problems, either due to fur biting, diet, or even lack of a good DAILY dust bath. Make sure your chinchilla has access to its dust bath every evening during play time and has plenty of water, hay, and pellets. Supplements may be necessary (contact your breeder). As for fur biting, this requires a vet visit and is potentially serious.

    2. Stress- this is pretty much a habitat issue. Is the cage big enough? Are there multiple levels to jump on? Are there enough solid wood resting areas and is the cage floor solid (google: "chinchilla" "bumblefoot")? Is your chinchilla is a dark, cool, quiet place during the day? Monitor your house temperature, and especially the humidity! You kind find an inexpensive temp/humidity monitor at a hardware store, such as Home Depot, for around $12-15. I live in FL and never allow it to get above 71 during the summer, and lower the temp if the humidity is above 50%.

    3. Furslip. If your chinchilla is new or very "jumpy" (in the frightened way), this is just a matter of time and patience.  Chinchillas furslip (or "shed) as a fearful or stressed reaction. As natural prey animals, this allowed them to wiggle out of the grasp of some predators, but as domesticated animals, this can be a little shocking to their owners. Do not hold your chin tightly or try and grab for him/her. You will likely need to spend at least a couple hours each evening (perhaps more, depending on the chin's age) interacting during play time. Speak softly, never grab or chase your chinchilla, and when he/she approaches you, offer a gentle vocal praise or a half of a raisin (don't over do it- much like giving too much junk food to a young kid, as it will lead to digestive problems and even a bad diet).

  4. I groom dogs and sometimes you could get a shampoo that works really well.  It is called Shed-spot or something like that.  it is yellow.  also a horse shedding comb works wonders!

I am not positive what causes it.  it could just be the breed or stress or someting.

    hope this helps.  goodluck!
