How do you get a font you download to really be a font? Windows XP?

if i download a font the most i get is i can make it onto an icon on my desktop. i need the font to be avaiable on the scroll-down list on microsoft word. I really need to be able to do this so can you please help me????

copy paste it to the fonts folder in windows.

Then it will install and you can use it(some of the fonts can't be installed).
