  1. I get the impression from reading and answering a lot of questions in this Yahoo! Answers category that prospective students and their parents believe that there is a lot more institutional scholarship money available than there really is. When I say "institutional", I mean money that a particular school gives you, as opposed to money that comes from some outside organization.

There are colleges and universities in the United States with huge endowment funds - these are the Harvards and the Yales and the Stanfords and the Princetons - universities with millions, and in some cases billions of dollars  of investment accounts - much of which was funded by wealthy alumni, and grown many times larger by wise investments. Those schools use that money to attract the best and brightest college applicants in the world.

Don't read this next part with a dirty mind, but...

Less "endowed" schools have far fewer scholarships to offer their students. They only wish they could afford to compete with the "big boys" when it comes to scholarship funding, because every school would like to attract very bright and talented applicants.

If you didn't receive a scholarship award from the University of Miami, and you have outstanding application credentials, this tells you just how limited the scholarship funds are at the U of M. Don't be too hard on them, because that's typical of what other mid-size private schools are facing - I don't think you'd do much better for scholarships at a William & Mary, for example.

You did what students are expected to do - you applied to the school. Presumably, you were considered for whatever scholarship funds are available, and the financial aid office would have included any awards on your aid offer letter.

You are facing another reality, and that is that private universities are so expensive that they're not affordable for many families. That's why many students have no choice but to attend their state university system - or in some cases, to begin their education at a local community college.

I'm sorry you didn't get good news from the U of M. Good luck!

  2. Yes, your score is sufficient enough to get a scholarship. To get a scholarship you need to apply yourself because it's very competitive to get one these days. Maybe you can go to

    it's about scholarships information.

    Good luck
