  1. Easy, just take up the game and something will pop up;  driving, putting, lol

Seriously, you usually need to pay to get an official handicap.  If you join a golf club/course, they will usually offer handicap services, but they may charge 30 bucks or so; some places offer it free to members.  You should call around and see if they offer the service to nonmembers and at what price.

I use the 'unofficial' Yahoo! handicap tracker that is free.  Go to the Golf page under Sports and you should see it.   Enter some scores(I think they need 10 min)  and soon you will have a good idea what your handicap is.

  2. Go to this Yahoo! site, input your scores and it will spit out your handicap.....doesn't get any easier than that!

    Good Luck!

  3. It depends on if you want a legitimate handicap or just want to know what your handicap would be.  There is a formula to calculate your handicap.  I won't explain it now unless you ask me to because it is a lengthy process with many calculations.  You have to join a club to have a legitimate handicap however.  Otherwise your scores are not eligible for peer review.  Join a club, pay the yearly handicap fee and start posting scores.  Your handicap is always based on your last 20 rounds but you will be given a handicap after 5 rounds.

  5. To find out what your handicap might be if it were calculated by and official handicaper (ususally your home club), check out the link below. Not only can you calculate the handicap you can also find the needed slope and rating for your favorite course (which is also printed on your score card).

The page also explains what a handicap is and what it is used for. Simply put, it is a number that players should try to play to for a specific course.

Remember that only an official handicap can be used in competition.

  6. I got mine from falling off of a ladder.

  7. If you have a home club go for the handicap test arranged by the club from time to time. But if you do belong to any golf club I'm sure you can go for the same test conducted by a nearby golf club that has a resident pro in its service, on a small fee.

The handicap test involves two parts, namely, a) you are tested on your knowledge of the game itself, including golf etiquette and rules of the game; and b) you are actually taken on a round of 18 holes of golf on the specific course with the handicap tester, for him to see if you really can play the game or not and what starting handicap he will assign to you after the round.

You'll be assigned a handicap of between 20 - 36 as a starter, depending on your game that day. However, most clubs will not allow a beginner with a handicap of 24-36 to play on their course.

    I hope this helps!
