I'm 19 years of age and from NY. Do you need college experience and how challenging is it to get a job at the U.N. to be a diplomat or an ambassador? Is this sort of of job that like not everyone can get as easily? What are the requirements and qualifications? What does it take?

  1. It does help if you know someone who works there already (try hanging out at the places these people have lunch or drinks) as I found out when I lived in Geneva but the best thing by far is to learn French (the most important) and learn AT LEAST one other language so you can hold fluent conversations in them.  You have to have a college degree or be at college and try to work there as an intern - however, the UN in New York and Geneva only take the very best.

  2. I would say that you need at least a university degree (probably masters for them though). If you're enrolled in uni try looking and seeing if they offer any graduate programs. You'd probably need to speak at least 2 languages fluently as well.

My teacher was a UN interpreter. She spoke 7 languages plus had a degree in Languages and said you had to know someone to get in.

  3. I would imagine that being a UN Ambassador, much like being the Ambassador to most countries, is a political appointment. Any member country's foreign ministry (or State Department, in our case) sends the Ambassador to the UN.

  4. i appreciate ur thought of joining the un but i really think ur a bit too young i mean yeah ur 19 but i think u should just wait for   couple more years before joining the un and also since u live in ny u have a very good chance of getting a job in U.N.

    Ok all the best

  5. Sorry but the Senator of NY, if she wins has already got it fixed and set up for her husband who acts about 19 to be a Ambassador already. Besides there are more jobs out there that you can learn corruption in besides this one. Be a lawyer like them, they got very, very wealthy off of it.   I  would like to see you get into something more honest, your young and deserve more respect than something like this mess.
