How do you get a parakeet to come out of his cage. I want to play with him and he will not come out. He will not come out by showing him food. What do I do?

  1. How long have you had your parakeet?

Is it a girl or a boy?

If you haven't had it that long, it may take sometime for it to get used to you.

Boys are more friendly than girls.

I have 2 female parakeets, one is more friendlier than the other. It took the one sometime, but now we have it trained to come out of it's cage and fly around without hurting itself.

I would work with it, bring it out of the cage, with your barehands and hold it and hand feed it. It might take a week or a month or a year, but it will eventually just come to you! Good luck

  2. you probably can't do this unless they are in your room like mine are but I leave the cage open 24/7 and they come out all the time! I think they feel more comfortable that way because its on they're on terms and they aren't being forced, and then when they do come out I just put my finger under their belly's and they come up (I can't seem to get them to come when I just call though lol). Good luck!

  3. LOL, I understand your frustration. This section can be a little slow. So is the birds section.

But anyways, it could be that he's tired. My bird will give me the evil eye and make that aggravated noise if I try to play with him at night.

    Is this bird already tamed?

  4. Try gently putting your index finger in the cage and incourage her to get on by rubbing his belly. Do this repeatedly and eventually he will get on your finger  I had aparakeet once when i was a kid thats how I did it.

  5. hes probably not tame, look up on google if you want, but just sit at teh cage and talk in a gentle happy voice to him for about 20 minutes (or more if u want) a day. dont try to touch him. do this for at least a week or 2. then start trying to let him eat out of your hand, dont touch him still. and keep talking in a gentle happy voice. then after about another 2 weeks you can try petting him, then later picking him up.

itll take time though, so be patient and dont rush things, it maight take longer (or less time) than what i said.

addition: to what the girl above me said, girls are actually friendlier than boys, ive had birds my entire life and its always been true, they are friendlier and cuddlier. boys talk more though (in birds that can talk)
