How do you get an old typewriter to stop smelling?

We have an antique typewriter, and it has that old gross smell. Is there anyway we can get the smell to go away? thanks (:

  1. Take it to a service center and have it cleaned and lubricated.  The smell on old manual typewriters is normally old lubricant.  Now, finding a typewriter service place is difficult, so maybe look for a sewing machine repair place, and see if they can do it.  

    If it is an antique electric typewriter,,,, unplug it.  Don't plug it back up, until you have the motor checked.  


  2. In the old days, we would remove all the rubber parts (platen & feed-rollers) send them off to get recovered, and soak the machine in solvent.  After it soaked a while, we would dry it with compressed air, lubricate it, and install the newly recovered rubber parts.

    I actually did this for a living a few decades ago.

  3. Replace it with a computer.
